It's been over a year since I was elected to represent you on the Newport News City Council. It's been an exciting year and hopefully I have represented you in ways you have wanted.
During these economically difficult times it has been difficult to continue to provide the core services of your government while funding the "amenities" we, as citizens, have come to expect. Although some may think we are "destroying their city" by trying to respond to those who are struggling to keep their homes, jobs, and afford the basics, I think most citizens realize the City of Newport News is over a BILLION dollars in debt. Yes - that's Billion with a "B". That includes unfunded liabilities in retirement, health and other benefits which will affect the retirements of those who have been loyal employees. Much of this debt has come from over-reliance on investments that, for a number of years, appeared to be growing quite strongly but were in fact just part of the bubble that burst for many of us.
During these times, I feel we have to prioritize "needs" vs "wants"! When People are losing their jobs with the city who have given 13,21,25 years of loyal service, I can't justify subsidizing "nice to have" organizations that should be self-supporting. Most citizens can't afford to buy tickets to attend their events (which is why they are floundering) yet some expect us to use taxpayer's money to keep them afloat.
Announcements/Coming attractions:
I will be holding the last of five town hall meetings in which she has partnered with School Board member, Betty Dixon. The meeting will be Monday, June 8th at 7PM at Warwick High School Auditorium. Come and ask your questions about the school system and the city. In addition, I is always interested in hearing your suggestions for a more efficient and responsive city government.
I attended the opening of the Republican Headquarters for the State and local candidates on June 6, 2009. The Headquarters is in the old Noland Building on the corner of Bland Boulevard and Jefferson Avenue. (See attached flyer and pictures). The hours are 9AM to 8PM Monday through Thursday and 10-5 on Friday and Saturday.
The Hampton Roads Republican Women's Club will hold its monthly meeting June 13th at the Headquarters at 9:30 AM. The speaker will be Delegate Bob Marshall. Come join us for this special occasion.
I attended the Drug Court Graduation on June 5, 2009. This wonderful and inspiring program had put 11 people through the program for this graduation. These graduates all have jobs and have put their lives back together to become contributing members of society. They have learned from their mistakes and their stories are impressive. This program costs a fraction of what it would cost to incarcerate them and is well worth the money.
I read a Proclamation from the Mayor and City Council that declared the week of May 31 - June 6th to be Foster Parents week. The occasion was held at Midtown Community Center June6th with a picnic and lots of prizes for these wonderful people who take children into their homes. I will be wearing their T-shirt with the logo: Newport News Foster Parents...The Helping Hands of Love at the June 9th City Council meeting.
Speaking of Meetings, do come down and visit City Council to speak on issues of concern for you. There are normally meetings on the 2nd and 4th Tuesdays of each month with the exception of July, August, and December when there is only one. Make sure you check the calendar for these and other events.
